Sir Thomas Allen Musical Evening

Sunday 8th February may have been a wintry night but Auckland Castle was full of warmth, light and beautiful music as it hosted the Sir Thomas Allen Musical Evening in aid of the Trust. Around 150 guests enjoyed a drinks reception before the recital began in the Throne Room.

Sir Thomas was in fine baritone voice, with a programme which included Franz Shubert, George Butterworth (Six Songs from A Shropshire Lad) and Jerome Kern. The audience also heard two Mozart pieces from soprano Ruth Jenkins. Both were ably accompanied by Malcolm Martineau on piano.

It was a touching return for Sir Thomas, who gave a recital for the Trust 19 years ago at Raby Castle. DWT would like to express its thanks to the performers for kindly donating their talents to the evening, in aid of the Trust. It is hoped that this event will become a regular event in the region's calendar.

Sir Thomas was born in County Durham and is arguably the area's most famous musician, having enjoyed a glittering operatic career spanning thirty five years. With a busy schedule of concerts we are fortunate that he has agreed to fly in for this one-off recital in the stunning setting of the Throne Room of Auckland Castle.
